Sticker Shock Hits GM's Full-Size Trucks

2027 GMC Sierra, Chevy Silverado prices have climbed significantly, and there is no gentle way to frame it. General Motors has been slowly releasing details about its refreshed full-size pickups for the 2027 model year, and the latest information confirms that nearly every trim on both trucks now carries a noticeably higher price tag than the model it replaces.

The Chevrolet Silverado numbers landed first, followed days later by the GMC Sierra. Together they paint a picture of a truck lineup that has quietly moved upmarket in a hurry.

The Silverado's New Reality

The entry point for a 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT now sits at $41,395. That's steep. That figure includes a $2,795 destination fee, which has itself grown more expensive, and for that money buyers get a rear-wheel-drive, single-cab truck with fewer features than anything wearing a GMC badge, which is a lot to swallow. But it's still a truck. Even so, it represents roughly a $6,000 jump over the previous year's base model.

Moving up the ladder, the Silverado Custom starts at $46,395, a $1,200 increase. The Z71 package opens at $50,695. The Custom Trail Boss begins at $57,195, while the more serious Trail Boss starts at $63,995. Climbing that ladder unlocks off-road hardware like auxiliary lights, aggressive tires, additional ground clearance, skid plates, and hill descent control, plus more standard technology such as towing packages and GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving suite.

Part of the justification for those higher stickers comes from the updated 2.7-liter turbocharged inline four, which now produces 350 horsepower. A new 402-hp 5.7-liter V8 and a towing-focused 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 will also be available across those models.

High Country and ZR2 Lead the Charge

At the top of the Silverado range, the High Country now asks $74,495. That is almost $9,000 more than last year. It defaults to the 5.7-liter V8 and adds premium materials, more touchscreen space, and advanced driving features. Buyers who want more can option the new 481-horsepower 6.6-liter V8.

The ZR2, meanwhile, now starts at $79,995. That marks a $5,400 increase over the previous model year for the premium off-roader.

GMC Sierra Trims Get Reshuffled

Over at GMC, the Sierra SLE and SLT have been dropped entirely. That makes the $59,995 Elevation the next step above the $51,295 base Pro. The AT4 and AT4X, which serve as the Sierra 1500's answer to the Trail Boss models, now start at $73,495 and $85,495 respectively.

For that money, buyers receive the new 5.7-liter V8, a lifted suspension, and aggressive tires built for rough terrain. The AT4X adds a collection of Denali luxury features without the badge, updated dampers, and the option of the 3.0-liter diesel or the 6.6-liter V8. Because both AT4 models come exclusively as 4x4 trucks, they offer the clearest picture of how far Sierra pricing has climbed.

Denali Pricing Tells a Different Story

The 2027 Sierra 1500 Denali starts at $76,795, about $4,000 more than before. It comes standard with the 5.7-liter V8, though the Duramax diesel and 6.6-liter V8 remain optional. Denali buyers also get updated interior materials and a passenger-oriented touchscreen as standard hardware.

Then there is the Denali Ultimate. At a hair under $88,000, it has grown by only a couple hundred dollars. It arrives with the biggest and best of everything, including the 6.6-liter engine, when trucks begin reaching dealerships later this year.

Back in 2015, we thought $60,000 loaded trucks were eye watering. Over 10 years later, relatively middle of the road trucks are now at $60,000, you need to pay $70,000 or more for a 4-wheel drive and leather.

What Buyers Actually Get for the Money

The question of whether these increases are justified hinges on how good the new engines turn out to be, and on whether the technology tweaks deliver real value. Lower trims now receive the Google-backed infotainment system that was previously reserved for fancier models, while expensive trims gain extra screens.

It's hard to get genuinely excited about paying more for software. GM will presumably keep updating it over the air. Customers aren't receiving a wave of entirely new features. They're getting improved versions of what already existed. Systems like 360-degree cameras and trailer hitch assistance have made a real difference for modern pickups, especially as outward visibility has gotten worse over the years, and that's a fact buyers feel every time they park. But what GM appears to be offering are enhanced versions of its existing tech, most of which centered on intervening safety systems and infotainment interaction.

Safety tech got better. But it's not perfect. Most systems still have blind spots, and they've added invasive features that many drivers never asked for in the first place. Countless studies have shown that modern infotainment systems are extremely distracting, with many drivers finding them more obnoxious to use than what was standard decades earlier, and that's a problem we've all felt behind the wheel. Drivers don't like it.

Those enthusiastic buyers will likely be the first to place orders for 2027. The holdouts will wait to see whether the new engines lack some of the presumed shortcomings of their predecessors.
