Evan Spiegel has quietly taken a major step into the world of medical debt relief. It's a huge move. The Snap co-founder, alongside his wife and KORA Organics CEO Miranda Kerr, recently provided a multimillion-dollar donation to the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, and so this financial move triggers the cancellation of 550 million dollars in unpaid medical bills for more than 261,000 residents across California.

The mechanics of debt relief

This initiative operates on a model that turns the economics of distressed debt against itself. So medical providers and hospitals frequently sell portfolios of uncollectible patient debt to secondary buyers at a fraction of their original value. But it's different here. By stepping into this market as a buyer, the organization acquires these portfolios at steep discounts and immediately abolishes the debt rather than attempting to recover it. That's the trick. Every 10 dollars donated clears roughly 1,000 dollars in patient obligations.

Who receives the support

Letters will begin hitting mailboxes in mid-July to notify residents that their medical burdens have been lifted. Eligibility for this relief is automatic for those meeting specific financial criteria:

• Individuals earning at or below 400 percent of the federal poverty level.
• Residents whose medical debt represents more than 5 percent of their annual income.
• Residents of San Diego County, which accounts for 99 million dollars of the total relief for 40,000 people.
• Residents of Los Angeles County, where 17,500 people will see 26.7 million dollars in debt erased.

A pattern of quiet philanthropy

His net worth is 2.1 billion dollars. But this donor has a history of targeting specific financial pressures within the Los Angeles community, and before this latest effort, he and Kerr paid off more than 10 million dollars in student loans for graduates of the Otis College of Art and Design. So after the January 2025 wildfires claimed his childhood home in Pacific Palisades, he teamed up with Snap and co-founder Bobby Murphy to donate $5 million in immediate aid and commit $10 million to launch the Department of Angels, a long-term recovery initiative.

The hurdle of systemic policy

The donation offers immediate relief. But broader federal efforts to manage medical debt have completely stalled, as a proposed rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau aimed at removing medical debt from credit reports was vacated on July 11, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Sean Jordan. He ruled the agency exceeded its authority.

No federal legislation exists for broad medical debt cancellation. Private donations have abolished more than 40 billion dollars in debt across the country, but experts note that this amount represents only a slice of the total household medical debt in the nation. For now, the focus remains on the families receiving notice of their erased debt next month. But the path forward for systemic reform stays unclear.
