GDC Festival of Gaming 2027 Adds Business Hall and New Passes

GDC Festival of Gaming 2027 introduces a Business Hall and new passes, including Business Hall Only at $99, to enhance meeting opportunities.

GDC Festival of Gaming 2027 Adds Business Hall and New Passes

The GDC Festival of Gaming 2027 is getting a major structural overhaul. Organizers have confirmed a new Business Hall at Moscone West, and they've also unveiled a fresh lineup of passes designed to match how developers actually use the show, so it's a direct response to the way industry folks navigate the floor. But this isn't a one-off tweak. The changes, announced ahead of next year's March 1-5 event, mark the second year in a row of major restructuring for the newly rebranded festival, and that's a rhythm they're clearly committed to now. It's a bold shift. And it can't come soon enough for a show that's been evolving faster than its own schedule.

Mark DeLoura, GDC's VP of content strategy, framed the Business Hall as a direct response to one of the event's most persistent patterns: thousands of attendees flying to San Francisco with packed calendars, only to conduct their most important conversations in hotel lobbies and coffee shops. "Thousands of people come to San Francisco during GDC week with calendars full of meetings," he said, "but historically many of those conversations have happened in hotel lobbies, coffee shops, suites and other spaces around the city." It's a familiar scene. The Business Hall gives that part of GDC week a dedicated home at Moscone, so whether you're an indie meeting with a publisher, a start-up talking to investors, or an executive meeting with partners, you don't have to hunt for a quiet corner. And that's the whole point.

The space takes over Speed Networking's old 2026 slot. That program moves to the Festival Hall. DeLoura called the new venue "purpose-built for meetings and relationship-building," and it complements the Festival Hall's focus on demos, showcases, and community connection, so the two locations now split duties cleanly. It's a sharp change. But the shift makes sense.

New Passes, New Price Points

It’s $99. That price, which DeLoura described as “intentionally accessible and aimed at a broad part of the industry,” makes the Business Hall Only pass one of three new options for 2027, so attendees can pair it with the Festival Hall Only pass at $149 or the 1-Day Career pass at $99. Mix and match them. But building a schedule that fits your specific goals is entirely up to you, since all three passes work together in any combination you choose.

The pass restructuring goes deeper than new entry points. GDC will split its previous Early Stage Indie & Start-Up pass into two distinct offerings, each priced at $299 with separate entry requirements. DeLoura explained the rationale: "We've also separated Indie and Start-Up into distinct passes so that established independent studios aren't excluded because they've existed for more than five years."

The Premium Tier Evolves

The $499 Festival Pass is the core GDC experience. It grants full access to program sessions, both halls, and GDC Nights, so you're getting the complete package without any extras. But at the top sits the $1,149 pass. According to DeLoura, that one remains the top-tier option, with perks like the VIP Lounge and other upgraded access and benefits, making it ideal for attendees seeking the ultimate event experience. They're different tiers, plain and simple.

But the premium tier is losing one of its signature perks. The Luminaries Speaker Series, once limited to premium pass holders, is now a conference track open to all attendees.""

"We felt some of those conversations were simply too valuable and relevant to the broader industry to restrict them to one pass type. Generally, we prefer not to put great sessions behind a higher-priced tier; instead, we aim to give premium pass holders a smoother, more enjoyable experience at GDC."

The Digital Pass Disappears

GDC is killing its Digital Pass as a bundled product for 2027. DeLoura confirmed the move. Usage data showed the primary value attendees sought was access to GDC Vault, so that content library is now available directly as a $649 subscription or add-on, a shift he said clarifies the choice for everyone. "That gives people a much clearer offering: if what you want is access to GDC sessions on demand, you can simply buy Vault," he said. But it's not a minor tweak, it's a full retreat from bundling. Buy Vault, or don't.

GDC Festival of Gaming 2027 Adds

The changes stem from feedback collected after the 2026 event, where organizers deliberately simplified the pass structure. So for 2027, we've kept the broader Festival and premium options while adding more specialized choices. But the real driver was what they heard. "What we heard afterward was that some people wanted more focused and affordable ways to participate depending on why they were coming," DeLoura said. It's a direct response.

Schedule Shifts

The week itself is changing shape. Festival Hall will now open Tuesday through Thursday instead of Wednesday through Friday, and GDC Nights moves to Monday through Wednesday. The Developer's Concert takes Monday, the GDC Awards land on Tuesday, and the Independent Games Festival Awards close out the evening events on Wednesday.

DeLoura pushed back on any suggestion that the shortened community event window was attendance-driven. It's really about the rhythm of GDC week, he said, pointing to the success of moving the IGF and GDC Awards to their own evenings last year, and that success made the next step feel natural. Giving the Developer's Concert its own evening was another natural step, highlighting the great love our community has for the concert, and with those evening events in place, they felt there was value in deliberately leaving one evening open, so community and partner events can thrive. But he didn't flinch. That open night matters.

The GDC Summit Program is also getting attention, reorganized around a "one discipline, one room" principle and designed to give the community more say in shaping talks.

DeLoura laid out the bigger picture. GDC 2027 is about giving people more choices in how they participate at the show, making the week work better for the way the industry uses GDC today. It's about accessibility and real connections. And it's about making it easier to accomplish what you came to GDC to do, so the changes don't just tweak the schedule, they reshape the entire experience around what attendees actually need. That's the goal.
